Benalla is Michael's home town so it's a regular destination for us. Applying a 'tourist' lens during this visit was an interesting experience. The Broken River, which snakes majestically through the town, provides a beautiful backdrop to the myriad of parks, gardens and sports grounds that are the lifeblood of this part of regional Victoria. Unlike many other country towns where remnants of once grand public spaces poke defiantly and desperately through rusted gates or overgrown hedges, Benalla's civic pride is obvious. Relics from yesteryear are lovingly maintained alongside more modern additions to their outdoor attractions. The 'rocket' park is a favourite with the kids, the dogs appreciate the expansive off lead areas and I always love the peaceful beauty of the rose gardens.
We enjoyed the generous hospitality of Michael's mum & step dad between Christmas and New Year. It was an indulgent period; we had daily hot showers, lovely home cooked meals, chilled sauv blanc, loads of movies and games for the kids, sleep ins and more than enough chocolate to last the year! We took leisurely walks around the 'lake' and fussed over Gandalf. It was bloody hot for most of the time so we also made the most of the airconditioning and ice cold drinks on offer!
After Jesse survived a horrible bout of gastro in Bright, (big thanks to Aunty Helen for encouraging him to drink the river water!) the poor bugger developed an ear infection in Benalla. I guess this was our first taste of the inequitable access to healthcare in the country compared to the city. Benalla has no bulk billing GP's! WTF! With a tight budget to maintain and an obvious diagnosis, i objected to spending $76.50 for a paediatric consult. We instead chose to drive the 1/2 hour to Wangaratta where there were a few bulk billing options. Jesse's on the mend now but the same can't be said for the health system in Benalla. How does a young family living in a regional town on a modest income afford $76.50 every time their children need to see a doctor...Benalla GP's - you should be ashamed of your greed.
