It's happening! Bilbo the Prado has been joined by Gandalf the Camper. Gandalf came from Gunnedah (near Tamworth). Michael and I took a leisurely drive up and back in a weekend - 2,300km! We don't plan to keep that pace next year but we did see some beautiful country we're hoping to visit again.
So, what have we got for our big adventure?
THE CAR
A pimped up Prado GXL diesel...lift kit, heavy duty suspension, snorkel, bullbar, etc. Why a Prado?
It was big but not too big
We could get one in our price range with about $100,000km on the clock & a host of options already fitted (Land Cruisers in the same price range had done a minimum of 200 – 300,000km – CRAZY!)
It has plenty of towing capacity
Toyota's are a reliable and proven vehicle in the Outback with plenty of servicing and spare parts options
It is comfortable and included a host of options that will come in handy eg DVD player!
THE CAMPER
Goldstream Storm RV offroad. Why a pop up/out camper rather than our trusty soft floor camper?
We will be off the ground
It will be much quicker to set up/pack up
It has more storage
It has heating, cooling and hot water
We can easily hook up multiple solar panels
It has a quick set-up awning as well as a full annex
It is an off roader with credentials for making it through some of the rough stuff we will encounter
